Guesstimates

A guesstimate is a logical answer built from almost no data: a market size, a revenue figure, how many golf balls fit in a bus. It is not the final number that matters, it is how you get there.

The setup

What a typical prompt looks like

Int
Interviewer“Guesstimate the number of washing machines sold in a year.”
You
Your moveBefore estimating anything, pin the question down with three clarifiers.
Clarifier 1 of 3

Over what time period and in which location am I estimating this?

1
Clarifier 2 of 3

If it is a market size question, should the answer be in units sold or revenue generated?

2
Clarifier 3 of 3

If the industry or price point is unfamiliar, ask to clarify, or assume a standard product to keep the maths simple.
